It’s been an incredible season for the GIANTS from a team point of view, however, with the Brownlow Medal on Monday night, we’ve taken the opportunity to look at some of the individual efforts. 

All Australians Toby Greene and Heath Shaw may catch the umpire’s attention in 2016, while midfielders Dylan Shiel, Callan Ward and Stephen Coniglio could also poll well.

The goal kicking exploits of Steve Johnson, Jeremy Cameron and Jonathon Patton could also warrant votes in particular matches.

Round 1 Vs. Melbourne – two point loss.

Best: Ward, Scully, Shaw, Davis, Shiel, Lobb

Shaw had 30 disposals and took seven marks in defence, while Shiel, Ward and Scully were all busy in the midfield with 29, 28 and 27 disposals respectively.  However, polling votes in a losing side is always difficult.

Round 2 Vs. Geelong – 13 point win.

Best: Griffen, Scully, Mumford, Johnson, Kelly, Greene

Ryan Griffen starred in the win in Canberra, kicking two goals as he collected 32 disposals. Toby Greene was busy with a game-high 34 disposals, while ruckman Shane Mumford dominated against his former club with 33 hit outs and four bone crunching tackles.

Round 3 Vs. Sydney – 25-point loss.

Best: Shaw, Scully, Shiel, Davis, Patfull, Wilson  

Heath Shaw showed why he was in the 2015 All Australian side, with yet another dominant display down back against the Swans. Shaw took nine marks while collecting 27 disposals. Scully continued his early season form with 29 disposals, seven marks and six tackles.

Round 4 Vs. Port Adelaide – 86-point win.

Best: Shiel, Ward, Coniglio, Greene, Lobb, Whitfield, Wilson, Mumford

Rory Lobb may get some attention for his four goals in a dominant forward display at Manuka Oval, however he may miss out on votes to midfielders Shiel, Ward and Coniglio. Co-captain Ward had 24 disposals and kicked two goals, while Coniglio collected a game-high 34-disposals. Toby Greene may have caught the attention of the umpires with 27 disposals and a goal.

Round 5 Vs. St. Kilda – 47-point win. 

Best: Greene, Coniglio, Williams, Wilson, Cameron, Griffen, Shaw

It is hard to see anyone but Toby Greene getting the three votes after what was a dominant display against the Saints. Greene kicked 4.3, took nine marks and collected 31 disposals including 23 kicks. Jeremy Cameron kicked five goals, while Steve Johnson also managed to kick four goals. Zac Williams and Nathan Wilson were influential off the half back, while Coniglio and Scully found plenty of the football in the midfield.

Round 6 Vs. Hawthron – 75-point win. 

Best: Shaw, Coniglio, Shiel, Lobb, Ward, Johnson, Whitfield

It’s tough to separate the best three players for the GIANTS during their dismantling of the 2015 Premiers at Spotless Stadium. Rory Lobb will attract attention for his 10 marks and four goals, while Johnson lit up the first half with five goals of his own. Shaw was again dominant down back with 32 disposals and 11 marks, and Coniglio on Shiel again racked up the touches in the midfield. Greene was again prominent with 22 touches and three goals.

Round 7 Vs. Fremantle – 18-point win. 

Best: Coniglio, Shaw, Ward, Mumford, Kelly, Johnson

A Western Australian set the tone for the GIANTS first ever win in Perth. Stephen Coniglio collected 32 disposals, laid six tackles and kicked two goals in the win over Fremantle. Co-captain Callan Ward was also busy in the middle with 31 disposals, while Heath Shaw again stood out in defence with 26 disposals and 10 marks. Josh Kelly also stood out with 26 disposals and a goal.

Round 8 Vs. Gold Coast – 91-point win.

Best: Shiel, Kelly, Williams, Cameron, Coniglio, Shaw, Hopper, Ward

There’s a long line for who could get votes for this win at Spotless Stadium. Jacob Hopper had a stand out debut collecting 32 disposals, however experienced teammate Dylan Shiel was dominant with 35 touches. Zac Williams was highly influential with 31 disposals and Jeremy Cameron kicked seven goals. Josh Kelly’s brilliant form continued with the talented on baller getting 29 touches and bagging two goals.

Round 9 Vs. Western Bulldogs – 25-point win. 

Best: Ward, Shaw, Coniglio, Scully, Greene, Cameron, Williams 

It was another standout performance from co-captain Callan Ward against his former club. Ward laid 11 tackles and collected 30 disposals, but it was Heath Shaw who really stole the show stats-wise. The defender recorded 36 kicks at 97 per cent disposal efficiency, recorded two handballs and took 14 marks. Toby Greene managed 22 disposals and three goals, while Stephen Coniglio had 32 disposals and a goal. Forward Jeremy Cameron could be among the votes for his five goals and seven marks.

Round 10 Vs. Adelaide – 22-point loss. 

Best: Shiel, Kelly, Coniglio, Scully, Greene, Haynes 

It was a tough night out for the GIANTS in front of a packed Adelaide Oval, however Dylan Shiel stood out. The gun midfielder kicked two goals and had 29 disposals in a solid midfield display. Tom Scully was impressive with two goals and 25 disposals as Josh Kelly collected 28 touches and kicked a goal. Nick Haynes was impressive down back with six marks and 22 touches, while down forward Toby Greene kicked three goals and had 19 disposals.

Round 11 Vs. Geelong – 10-point loss. 

Best: Shiel, Scully, Williams, Ward, Whitfield, Davis

Back-to-back interstate trips for the GIANTS saw back-to-back losses and another solid performance from Dylan Shiel. 32 disposals and a goal sees him a chance to poll a vote, while Lachie Whitfield had one of his finest games with 28 disposals, nine marks and three goals. Toby Greene bagged another three goals and Shane Mumford won 34 hit outs.

Round 12 Vs. Sydney – 41-point win.

Best: Kelly, Shaw, Greene, Davis, Wilson, Mumford, Ward

10th Sydney Derby and 100th game as a club this was a night to remember for the GIANTS. Toby Greene celebrated the milestone with four goals, 21 disposals and eight marks as Josh Kelly shone with 27 touches. Steve Johnson stood out in just his second Derby with 27 possessions and 2.3 as Phil Davis appeared to win his battle with Swans spearhead Lance Franklin. Fellow defender Heath Shaw was on top of his game again with 10 marks and 25 disposals.

Round 13 Vs. Essendon – 27-point win.

Best: Coniglio, Williams, Greene, Ward, Shaw

It was a tough come from behind win for the GIANTS in Round 13. Toby Greene, Zac Williams, Heath Shaw and Stephen Coniglio starring in the win that will also be remembered for Matt Kennedy’s debut. Greene kicked four goals and had 22 touches while Coniglio kicked a goal and finished with 29 disposals. Shaw was again at the top of his game with 31 possessions and seven mark. Kennedy kicked three goals as Williams chimed in with two goals.

Round 14. Vs Carlton – 62-point win.

Best: Shiel, Coniglio, Johnson, Williams, Ward, Mumford, Kelly

It was a scrappy contest at Spotless Stadium as the GIANTS headed into their bye round. Steve Johnson was at his best with four goals as Dylan Shile dominated the midfield with 34 disposals and two goals. Co-captain Callan Ward collected 33 touches with Stephen Coniglio not far behind with 31 touches and a goal. Shane Mumford dominated the ruck with 35 hit outs.

Round 15 – Bye

Round 16 Vs. Collingwood – 32-point loss.

Best: Coniglio, Cameron, Haynes, Kelly, Mumford 

Collingwood fought back from a four goal deficit at half time to cause a massive upset at Spotless Stadium. Stephen Coniglio battled hard in the midfield with 30 disposals, while Jeremy Cameron bagged five goals in what was a forgettable game for the GIANTS.

Round 17 Vs. Brisbane – 79-point win. 

Best: Ward, Coniglio, Kelly, Shiel, Greene, Cameron 

The GIANTS were always going to come out firing after their disappointing performance against the Magpies. In a clinical game, it was hard to separate who was the GIANTS best on a huge night at the GABBA. Callan Ward ran riot in the midfield with 31 disposals and three goals as fellow midfielders Dylan Shiel (34 possesion and a goal) and Stephen Coniglio (32 disposals and nine tackles) joined in the fun. Jeremy Cameron kicked three goals and took nine marks in wet conditions and Toby Greene managed 29 touches and two goals. Josh Kelly also bobbed up with three goals and 26 disposals.

Round 18 Vs. Port Adelaide – 19-point win.

Best: Scully, Shaw, Mumford, Coniglio, Shiel, Kelly, Cameron, Haynes

Another game on the road and another big win, this time in an arm wrestle against Port Adelaide. Shane Mumford was GIANT in the ruck with 49 hit outs and 10 tackles as Tom Scully collected 29 disposals and kicked a goal. Heath Shaw had 30 disposals (29 were kicks) as Josh Kelly again featured in the best players due to his 30 disposals. Dylan Shiel could again feature in the votes after picking up 28 disposals and kicking two important goals.

Round 19 Vs. Richmond – 88-point win.

Best: Coniglio, Scully, Shaw, Mumford, Johnson, Shiel, Wilson

A record Manuka Oval crowd got more than they bargained for as the GIANTS savaged the Tigers in a percentage-boosting win. Tom Scully (30 disposals and two goals.), Stephen Coniglio (33 disposals and seven tackles) and Heath Shaw (29 disposals and 11 marks) were all dominant in the win as Steve Johnson, Toby Greene and Sam Reid all kicked three goals. Shane Mumford had 28 hit outs and 16 handballs in another magnificent game as Devon Smith laid an impressive 14 tackles.

Round 20 Vs. Gold Coast – eight points.

Best: Coniglio, Scully, Johnson, Williams, Patton, Greene

A game that could have truly gone either way for the GIANTS had it not been for the likes of Stephen Coniglio (33 disposals), Tom Scully (28 disposals and nine tackles) and Shane Mumford (51 hit outs and eight tackles). Jeremy Cameron nailed three goals, while Jonathon Patton, Toby Greene and Steve Johnson kicked two each in the nail-biting win.

Round 21 Vs. West Coast – one point loss.

Best: Ward, Greene, Coniglio, Griffen, Shiel, Lobb

The less said about this heartbreaker the better. Rory Lobb was stunning up front with four goals, while Toby Greene battled hard for his goal, 23 disposals and 11 marks. Dylan Shiel was massive with 30 disposals, Stephen Conglio had 28 and eight tackles and co-captain Callan Ward never stopped running with 25 disposals.

Round 22 Vs. Fremantle – 92-point win. 

Best: Griffen, Patton, Haynes, Whitfield, Williams, Tomlinson

The GIANTS finished their magnificent season at Spotless Stadium with a record win over Fremantle. Jonathon Patton came of age with six goals and eight marks while Ryan Griffen was best on ground with 30 touches, 10 tackles and a goal. Nick Haynes was GIANT down back with 13 marks as fellow defender Adam Tomlinson had one of his best games as a GIANT with 20 disposals and 12 marks.

Round 23 Vs. North Melbourne – 37-point win.

Best: Patton, Johnson, Smith, Shiel, Scully, Shaw  

The GIANTS finished the home and away season in style with a massive win over fellow finals contenders North Melbourne. Jonathon Patton was again the star with five goals and nine marks as Tom Scully and Dylan Shiel both registered 29 disposals and seven marks. Heath Shaw showed he deserved his back-to-back All Australian selection with 25 disposals and Steve Johnson finished his first season at the GIANTS with four goals in a show stopping display, while fellow forward Devon Smith kicked two and collected 23 possessions.
