Steve Johnson’s decorated AFL career will continue in 2017 with the GIANTS today announcing that the mercurial forward will play on with the club next season.

After an outstanding first season with the GIANTS in 2016 - which saw Johnson play 22 games across the club’s most successful year to date – the 33-year old has re-committed to the club for another 12 months.

Johnson’s season included one bag of five goals and three four-goal hauls for a total of 43 goals this year, his best return since 2011.

Johnson said after a strong opening season with the AFL’s youngest club, he was looking forward to building towards his 16th AFL season.

“I really enjoyed my football with the GIANTS this season and feel that I still have plenty to offer as a player,” Johnson said.

“We are all obviously disappointed with how the season ended but there are plenty of positives to consider and room for improvement as we move into 2017.

“As was the case this time last year, I wouldn’t be committing to another season unless I didn’t think I could play at a high level and significantly contribute to the team.

“My body feels good and I’m excited about what the future holds for this group.”

GIANTS General Manager Football Wayne Campbell said Johnson deserved another year after a stellar 2016 season with the GIANTS.

“Steve put together a fantastic season this year and we’re delighted that he has re-committed for a further 12 months,” said Campbell.

“He brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to our playing group, both on and off the field, and he’ll no doubt continue to have a big impact on his team mates over the pre-season.

“Steve is the ultimate competitor and we think he has a lot to offer our playing group in 2017.”

Johnson’s career thus far extends to 275 games, three premierships, a Norm Smith Medal and three All Australian teams.
